Empowering Neighbors to Support Survivors

Your role in creating a safer community is invaluable.

We believe that everyone has a part to play in preventing domestic violence and supporting survivors. Our Community Education programs are designed to equip the general public, church groups, civic organizations, and local businesses with essential information and practical tools. By understanding the basics of domestic violence and knowing how to safely help, we can collectively foster a more compassionate and responsive community for those impacted by abuse right here in Southwestern Illinois.

Why Community Education Matters:

Domestic violence affects us all, directly or indirectly. By increasing public awareness and understanding, we can:

  • Reduce Stigma: Encourage open conversations and make it easier for survivors to seek help.

  • Promote Early Intervention: Help individuals recognize signs of abuse in friends, family, or colleagues.

  • Foster a Supportive Environment: Build a community where survivors feel safe, believed, and supported.

  • Empower Bystanders: Provide actionable strategies for safe intervention.

Our Customizable Presentations, Workshops, and Tabling:

We offer a variety of engaging and informative presentations tailored to meet the specific needs and interests of your group. Our experienced facilitators deliver these sessions in an accessible and respectful manner, creating a comfortable space for learning and discussion.

Common Topics Include:

  • Domestic Violence Basics: Understanding the Dynamics: Learn about the cycle of violence, power and control tactics, different forms of abuse (physical, emotional, financial, technological), and common myths vs. realities.

  • How to Help a Survivor: Gain practical guidance on how to respond when someone confides in you, what to say (and what not to say), connecting survivors to resources, and maintaining safety.

  • Our Service Overview: A comprehensive look at the free and confidential support services we provide to survivors and their families, including crisis intervention, advocacy, counseling, and more.

  • Bystander Intervention in Domestic Violence: Empowering individuals to safely and effectively step in when they witness or suspect abuse.

  • Healthy Relationships & Red Flags: Understanding what healthy relationships look like and identifying warning signs of unhealthy or abusive behaviors.

  • The Impact of Domestic Violence on Children and Families: Exploring the effects of abuse on children and how to support families.

  • Domestic Violence in Specific Communities: Addressing unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, individuals with disabilities, or other diverse populations.

We also love to participate in tabling events. At these events, our staff or volunteers set up an informational presence, offering free resources, brochures, and practical tools to help people understand the dynamics of domestic violence, recognize the signs of abuse, and learn about the confidential support services available. It's a perfect opportunity to raise awareness and ensure that survivors and their allies know where to turn for help.

Bring a Presentation to Your Group:

Whether you're a small book club, a large corporate team, a faith-based community, or a local service organization, we are here to educate and empower. Our goal is to make vital information accessible to everyone.
