Domestic Violence Doesn't Discriminate

When people think about domestic violence, many picture the same story: a woman with visible bruises trying to leave a physically abusive husband.
While that certainly happens, it's only part of the picture.
Domestic violence affects people of every age, race, religion, income level, gender identity, sexual orientation, profession, and education level. It impacts people living in cities and rural communities. It affects teenagers, retirees, stay-at-home parents, healthcare professionals, teachers, business owners, and college students.
Abuse is not caused by who someone is.
It's caused by one person choosing power and control over another.
Unfortunately, myths about domestic violence can make it harder for survivors to seek help.

Myth: Domestic violence only happens in certain kinds of relationships.
Reality: Abuse can occur in any relationship, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, faith background, or socioeconomic status.
Myth: If it were really that bad, they would just leave.
Reality: Leaving an abusive relationship is often the most dangerous time for a survivor. Many stay because of financial concerns, children, housing instability, fear, threats, or the hope that things will improve.
Myth: Domestic violence is always physical.
Reality: Abuse can be emotional, verbal, financial, technological, sexual, or psychological. Many survivors experience years of abuse before physical violence ever occurs.
Myth: You can tell who is being abused.
Reality: Most survivors do not fit a stereotype. Many continue going to work, caring for their families, volunteering in their communities, and showing up with a smile while navigating abuse behind closed doors.
At the Violence Prevention Center, we believe that everyone deserves safety, support, and the opportunity to live free from abuse.
Because domestic violence doesn't discriminate.
And neither should access to help.
