Starting counseling can feel like a big step—and sometimes it brings up questions about what the experience will actually be like. At the Violence Prevention Center, our goal is to create a safe, supportive space where you feel heard, respected, and empowered.
Here’s what you can expect when you come for counseling with us:
A Confidential and Safe Environment
Your privacy is important. Everything you share with your counselor stays confidential, except in rare cases where safety concerns require us to take action. We will explain confidentiality rules at your first visit so you know what to expect.
Your Counselor Listens Without Judgment
Our counselors are trained to listen deeply and compassionately. You can speak openly about your experiences, feelings, and concerns without fear of being judged.
Counseling Is About You and Your Needs
Every person’s healing journey is unique. Your counselor will work with you to set goals that feel right for you—whether that’s coping with stress, healing from trauma, or rebuilding relationships.
It May Take Time
Healing doesn’t happen overnight. Counseling is a process, and it may take several sessions before you feel noticeable changes. That’s okay. Your counselor will support you through each step.
You’re in Control
You decide how much to share and when. You can pause, ask questions, or take breaks whenever you need. Counseling is a partnership.
Types of Counseling Offered
We provide individual counseling as well as support groups. We also offer counseling tailored for children and teens who have been affected by violence.
Practical Support
Counselors at VPC don’t just talk—they can connect you with other resources, like safety planning, legal advocacy, housing, or community programs.
Getting Started Is Easy
You can call our 24-hour crisis line at 618-235-0892 to learn more or schedule an appointment. There is no cost for counseling services through VPC.
